GREENSBORO, N.C. – An arrest has been made in the killing of one of two men found dead following a Greensboro apartment fire.

Chris Adrean Collins, 18, has been charged with murder in the death of Lewis Humphrey, according to court documents.

Collins is accused of kidnapping the victim to commit a felony and then setting the apartment he was inside on fire. A second body was also found.

The apartment on Summit Avenue in Greensboro belonged to Kevin Moore, but there is no word on his whereabouts or if he was hurt.

Collins was jailed without bond on charges of first-degree murder, arson and kidnapping.

‘He was just a good person,’ says neighbor of second victim identified in Greensboro homicide, arson investigation

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The second victim of the arson turned homicide investigation in Greensboro has been identified as 55-year-old Kevin Moore.

"He was a good person. He really was. He was really funny and we had a lot of good times, a lot of good laughs together," remembers Tiffany Mishoe.

Moore was known as a friendly man who owned an apartment on Summit Avenue, who sought to make friends with his neighbors, like Mishoe.

"I'm so close. Like 100 feet from his home, so I'd go over and visit and we'd drink coffee and talk about music," she said.

On Wednesday night, Moore's apartment went up in flames.

"It was definitely heartbreaking," says Mishoe. "I saw the police tape and that it was his apartment and it turned out there had been a fire."

His friends hadn't heard from him in over a week, and they feared the worst.

Investigators say Moore and 44-year-old Lewis Humphrey were found dead inside of Moore's apartment.

"I cried a bit. It's real. There was always a little bit of hope that maybe it wasn't him," says Mishoe. "Maybe he was just somewhere else. But it was him."

18-year-old Chris Collins is now accused of killing both Moore and Humphrey and setting Moore's apartment on fire.

He's also facing two armed robbery charges and a kidnapping charge.

Police say he took an Apple cellphone from Moore and a Mastercard from Humphrey, while armed with an "unknown weapon capable of inflicting penetrating traumatic injuries."

Collins' first court appearance was on Friday. It was brief because investigators had not yet identified Moore as the second victim.

But as this tragic puzzle begins to get pieced together, Mishoe hopes that people will remember Moore for who he was, rather than what happened to him.

"Kevin was a very, very nice man," she says. "He was just a good person. This really is a tragedy."

John Wadham, who goes by Jack, says their marriage was contentious and full of accusations back and forth.

“She had a lot of different opinions about a lot of things, and she wasn’t happy about a lot of things. I said I think the best thing for us to do is to separate,” he said.

Wadham said he’s sad she’s in jail and hopes there’s help coming.

“The best-case resolution is hallelujah, maybe it’s going to finally come to an end and get it over with,” he said.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A man was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend in High Point, police report.

At about 12:05 a.m. Thursday morning, officers responded to 3995-2F Clubhouse Court at Deep River Point Apartments.

A caller, believed to be William J. Hayes III, 20, of South Carolina, told 9-1-1 dispatchers that his pregnant girlfriend had been shot and died.

The caller also reported that two people ran from the apartment when he arrived home but could not describe either person.

Officers, with the help of the Guilford County Sheriff's Office, used a K-9 to try to track from the apartment but were unsuccessful.

Mom gets life sentence in death of baby found in maggot-infested diaper

LE MARS, Iowa — A northeast Iowa mother will spend the rest of her life behind bars after being found guilty Wednesday in the death of her baby son.

A Plymouth County jury found 21-year-old Cheyanne Harris guilty of first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death.

Her son, Sterling, was found dead in a child swing in August of 2017 in his parents’ Alta Vista apartment. He was wearing a maggot-infested diaper that investigators say he had been wearing for at least nine days.

Assistant Attorney General Coleman McAllister said during the trial that the feces in Sterling’s diaper had attracted the maggots, and the baby’s irritated skin ultimately ruptured, causing an E. coli infection to develop, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

The child was 4 months old at the time of his death and weighed less than seven pounds. An autopsy by the State Medical Examiner’s Office found the infant measured well below the fifth percentile in size and weight for the child’s age.

An EMT who responded to the couple’s Hilltop Avenue apartment testified that the entire room was hot and reeked of urine, and that gnats flew into the air when she moved the boy’s blanket.

Sterling’s father Zachary Koehn was convicted of the same charges back in November.

Both face mandatory sentences of life in prison without parole.

Mother said 3-year-old vanished at swap meet, now cops call it a ‘diversion’

More than three decades after police fruitlessly searched a Las Vegas swap meet for a missing 3-year-old, his mother has been charged with murder.

Amy Fleming, 60, was arrested in Florida on Jan. 29 and is being extradited to Nevada to face a charge that she killed her son before setting out for the swap meet with the boy’s stepfather, Lee Luster, on Aug. 2, 1986.

“We believe they were at the swap meet as a diversion and [Francillon Pierre] was already deceased,” an investigator said at a Monday news conference, noting neighbors hadn’t seen the boy for weeks prior to that event, per the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Eight months earlier, a babysitter had found 30 to 40 welts on Francillon’s neck and back, reports the Las Vegas Review-JournalFleming and Luster, who moved to Florida in 1987, were found guilty of felony child abuse and sentenced to probation.

“We definitely believe that child abuse could have played a factor in this homicide,” the investigator said. “At this point, evidence points to [Fleming], but the investigation is ongoing,” an officer added, per the Sun Sentinel.

Fleming initially claimed Francillon vanished while the family was shopping for a bicycle. She later implicated his father, who was cleared as a suspect; he then lived in Haiti.

Police say new witnesses and evidence have emerged since 2017, when officers learned someone tried to apply for a fraudulent birth certificate in Francillon’s name. KTNV describes an “attempt at identity theft from overseas.”

Officers also reference torn-up letters sent between Fleming and Luster while they were jailed. In one, Fleming allegedly wrote, “What happened was totally unintentional, I’m sorry.”

Police haven’t said how they believe Francillon died; no body was ever found.

Mother speaks out after Rural Hall man’s body found burned in Craven County; roommate charged with murder

Nicholas Williams

RURAL HALL, N.C. — A mother is trying to figure out what to do next after her "big guy with a big smile" was found dead, his body burned and his roommate charged with murder.

Nicholas Williams, a 40-year-old man, was missing since Sunday.

It wasn't until Tuesday that first responders in Craven County would responded to the "brush fire" that turned out to be Nicholas' body.

Now, Norris Dwayne Rochelle Jr., 23, of Rural Hall, is charged with his murder.

Jo Williams, Nicholas' mother, is heartbroken. She is known throughout the community as the director of the Triad Food Pantry.

"This was a senseless murder," Jo Williams said. "I don’t know why it happened, and sometimes you don’t want to know why something happened. You want to know what you’re going to do next."

This isn't the first time the Williams family has lost a child.

Back in 1983, Jo Williams said she lost her daughter Tracey in a hit-and-run on Skeet Club Road.

The mother's final memories of Nicholas are still present in her mind.

As he walked out the door the last time she saw him, he looked back.

She asked him what was wrong, and he told her, "I just want to look back," Jo Williams said.

"He said, 'Mom, it’s good to see you and dad,' and that’s it and he walked on out the door," she recalled.

After learning the news of her son, the mother remembers asking her husband what they do next.

He told her, "We trust in God and go on."

Jo Williams said she hopes people remember her son. Anyone who wishes to honor his memory and pay respects is asked to offer a donation to the Triad Food Pantry.

Norris Dwayne Rochelle Jr.

When the body was found, the Craven County Sheriff's Office contacted the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office saying the remains found were a potential match for Nicholas Williams.

The medical examiner has not yet confirmed for certain that the body belongs to Nicholas, but investigators believe they have enough evidence to say it was him.

Tuesday evening, Forsyth County sheriff's deputies were at 735 Hallmark Drive in Rural Hall, where both Nicholas Williams and Rochelle lived, searching for clues.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office obtained evidence that led them to believe Rochelle was responsible for the man's disappearance.

Peter Schocker

Rochelle was taken into custody and is being held at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center.

An arrest warrant revealed the suspect had only lived in Forsyth County for about seven months. He spent at least part of that time living with Nicholas.

The sheriff's office did not release information on Rochelle's bond or future court dates.

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said Peter Schocker, 21, of New Bern, is in custody in Craven County in connection to the case and has been charged with accessory after the fact of murder in the death of a person.

The FBI wants help identifying the women in a confessed serial killer’s hand drawn portraits of his victims

The FBI is hoping portraits of women drawn by the man who says he killed them will help them to identify the victims and notify their families.

The agency released 16 images on Tuesday, drawn from memory by Samuel Little, who told authorities they are just some of the more than 90 people he killed over three decades.

“We are hoping that someone — family member, former neighbor, friend — might recognize the victim and provide that crucial clue in helping authorities make an identification,” said FBI spokesperson Shayne Buchwald. “We want to give these women their names back and their family some long awaited answers. It’s the least we can do.”

The strategy has worked before, Buchwald said. Women who appeared in two previously released portraits were identified, he said.

From three murders to 90

Little, 78, confessed to about 90 killings last year while serving three consecutive life sentences for murder, the FBI announced last year.

The killings occurred across the country, from Los Angeles to Miami, Houston to Cleveland, all between 1970 and 2005.

Little targeted marginalized and vulnerable women who were often involved in prostitution or addicted to drugs, Christina Palazzolo, a crime analyst for the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program wrote in a November FBI article. Palazzolo and Angela Williamson, a Justice Department senior policy advisor and ViCAP liaison, who both spoke to Little, said that he remembered great detail from the killings.

He remembered where he was, what car he was driving and could even draw pictures of the women he killed, the FBI said. He was less reliable on the dates of those incidents, however, the FBI said.

The stunning confessions could make Little the most prolific serial killer in US history if these cases are confirmed by law enforcement, Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland told CNN in December.

How the story was revealed

Little, also known as Samuel McDowell, was already in prison last spring when his name came up in the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program, known as ViCAP, in connection with a series of unsolved murders across the country. One killing in Odessa, Texas looked especially relevant.

So, Texas Ranger James Holland along with two FBI crime analysts traveled to California where Little was being held for beating and strangling three women and dumping their bodies in an alley, dumpster and a garage, according to the FBI.

Holland was trained in cold cases and visited Little, gaining his trust over time, Bland said.

“Over the course of that interview in May,” Palazzolo said in the FBI article, “he went through city and state and gave Ranger Holland the number of people he killed in each place. Jackson, Mississippi — one; Cincinnati, Ohio — one; Phoenix, Arizona — three; Las Vegas, Nevada — one.”

Little eventually confessed to killing about 90 people, according to the Texas Rangers and the FBI. Investigators have confirmed 34 of the confessed killings, authorities said in November. Many more are pending confirmation and a number remain uncorroborated.

Now in poor health, Little is in custody in California, according to Ector County DA Bland.

No formal charges on any of the additional killings have yet been brought.

CNN has reached out to E.J. Leach, the attorney representing Little in the Texas case, and has not yet received a response.

The FBI urged anyone with information about the victims to call or email analysts at the bureau’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program at 800-634-4097.

Unsealed documents reveal Hania Aguilar’s suspected killer was targeting her neighborhood

LUMBERTON, N.C. — Hundreds of pages of court documents unsealed Thursday reveal new information about what led to the arrest of Michael Ray McLellan in the kidnapping and murder of Hania Aguilar, WTVD reports.

The release of the documents comes one day after Hania's autopsy report was made public. It showed that, though the medical examiner was unable to specifically determine how Hania died, her "means of death was most likely a form of asphyxia."

According to the probable cause affidavit, there were multiple witnesses who reported a black man wearing a yellow bandana trying to break into their home.

According to the newly-released documents, one woman called investigators and said Michael Ray might be the guy. According to her statement, she saw him running away as helicopters searched the neighborhood from above.

The documents also reveal that witnesses told police McLellan was planning to target specific areas and people -- one of them being Rosewood Mobile Home Park, where Hania was kidnapped.

A witness also told investigators that McLellan wore a yellow bandana so that people wouldn't know he was black and would think he was a member of the gang Latin Kings.

Stepfather arrested, charged with first-degree murder in Arkansas toddler’s death

VAN BUREN, Ark. — Police arrested a man Wednesday and charged him with first-degree murder in relation to the death of his stepdaughter, according to KFSM.

Olivia Soto lived with her mother and her mother's new husband, Jordan Shreeve.

Shortly after Soto celebrated her second birthday last November, Shreeve called 911, hung up and called back, according to a police report. He reportedly told the dispatcher to send an ambulance to his home address and hung up.

Investigators said Shreeve was not home when they arrived. Olivia and her mother were the only ones home.

Police said the mother led them down a hallway to a room where the toddler was unresponsive on a bed. Police performed CPR until EMS arrived to provide further treatment.

Shreeve arrived at the home about an hour later, police said. He told investigators he left to take a friend home.

Inside the home, police found blood on the couch, in the hallway and on a dresser in the bedroom. Reports said Olivia had bruising on the left side of her face.

For three months, police continued gathering information. Neither Shreeve nor Olivia's mother told police what happened before the 911 call.

"We actually had one of our investigators go the funeral and attend and the mother never showed up to that funeral," Van Buren Police Sargent Jonathan Wear said.

Police said she and Shreeve were in Michigan at the time.

On Feb. 15, Shreeve and the woman showed up at the house — where Olivia would later die — with a moving truck. Police said the couple was planning on moving their belongings to Michigan, where police believe Shreeve has family.

Investigators found Shreeve at a Van Buren motel and arrested him on a first-degree murder charge.

"He's in there [in jail] today actually on a $1 million bond," Wear said.

The child's mother has not been charged with a crime, but Wear said that could change.

"There are some things still being done in the case so that is always a possibility in the future," Wear said.

An autopsy report stated that Olivia died by the actions of a person, not from falling out of her crib like her mother told police.

"Definitely the big break in the case is him returning here to Van Buren so we could locate him and place him under arrest," Wear said.

DENVER - A man who was fatally shot in a carjacking in Denver Friday morning as part of a four-state crime spree has been identified as a 58-year-old Uber driver.

David Rosenthal, 58, of Denver died from multiple gunshot wounds, the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner said. The manner of death was homicide.

On Tuesday, Uber confirmed that Rosenthal drove for the company and that he was using the app at the time of the shooting, according to KDVR.

"We are shocked and heartbroken by this horrific crime, and our thoughts are with David's family," an Uber spokesman said. "We cooperated with police on the investigation and hope the individuals responsible are brought to justice."

The carjacking happened at West Colfax Avenue and Perry Street, near Sloans Lake, about 1:50 a.m. Friday.

The black 2015 Cadillac was used two hours later in an armed robbery at a convenience store in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Six hours after the Wyoming robbery, the same men robbed a Wells Fargo bank in Park City, Utah, officials said.

Matthew Fanelli, 30, of New Mexico, was arrested Saturday in Oregon and is being held for investigation of first-degree murder in Rosenthal's shooting, the Denver Police Department said.

Fanelli's suspected accomplice, 31-year-old Jose Lopez-Jovel, was also arrested when officials said they tried to carjack a vehicle at a Red Robin restaurant in Roseburg, Oregon.

Fanelli allegedly drove off without Lopez-Jovel, who was immediately arrested, Oregon State Police said.

Fanelli is then to have allegedly fired gunshots at authorities during a chase. One shot hit a commercial vehicle and another hit an Oregon State Police vehicle.

He also allegedly shot at another vehicle with the bullet hitting an occupied child seat, Oregon State Police said.

After police lost sight of Fanelli, he allegedly tried to carjack another vehicle in a residential neighborhood, shooting a man and assaulting a woman during a robbery. The man was critically injured, Oregon State Police said.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that on Friday morning, Fanelli allegedly shot at people outside a strip club in Colorado Springs.

The sheriff's office said Fanelli became upset when he was asked to leave Deja vu Showgirls. The sheriff's office said Fanelli began shooting at the manager and two bouncers when he left. No one was injured.

Fanelli allegedly assaulted a female employee, who ran out of the building naked, the sheriff's office said.

BALTIMORE, Md. – A man who claimed his wife was stabbed in the chest after rolling down a window to give money to a panhandler has been arrested in her death.

WBAL reported that police now believe the death of 52-year-old Jacquelyn Smith was staged by her family.

Keith Smith, the victim’s husband, and his daughter, Valeria Smith, were arrested Sunday and charged with first-degree murder.

Jacquelyn Smith died Dec. 1 of last year. The original story, which police now say is false, was that she was driving through a Baltimore neighborhood with her family at 12:30 a.m. when she rolled down her window to give money to a panhandler.

The family said they saw a woman who appeared to be carrying a baby and holding a cardboard sign asking for help.

Jacquelyn Smith was sitting in the passenger seat and rolled down her window to hand the woman some money, according to Keith Smith’s original story.

A man then approached the car and tried to steal Smith’s wallet, according the suspect. The victim was stabbed in the chest and died after being taken to a hospital.

“The information and the evidence points to it was not a panhandler,” said Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison. “People took advantage of Baltimore.”

Police have not released details on the exact circumstances surrounding Jacquelyn Smith’s death.

Man charged after missing 11-year-old girl found dead in Alabama woods

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. -- Authorities have arrested an Alabama man for the death of an 11-year-old girl, whose body investigators found over the weekend, according to WHNT.

Christopher Wayne Madison, 33, faces charges of capital murder, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to DeKalb County Sheriff's Office records.

DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said preliminary autopsy results show that Amberly Barnett, 11, was strangled. Her body was found Saturday morning in a wooded area about 200 yards behind Madison's home, he said.

"I said my heart was shattered a few days ago," Welden said at a news conference Monday. "My heart is still shattered."

Citing the ongoing investigation, Welden said he couldn't release further details Monday.

"These last few days have been extremely tiresome and emotional for myself and our entire staff and all the assistants we had," Welden said. "It was a very tragic event."

Amberly, who lived in Polk County, Georgia, was visiting her aunt in Alabama when she disappeared. She was last seen at her aunt's house in Collinsville around 6 p.m. Friday. A dark-colored SUV was reportedly seen at the home around the time she disappeared.

"Our main focus is justice for our sweet angel that gained her wings," Welden said. "Please pray for the family."

‘Please daddy’: Chris Watts’ daughter pleaded for her life after watching sister’s murder, attorney says

$

Chris Watts' 4-year-old daughter knew her mother and younger sister, Celeste, had just been killed -- and she feared she would be next.

"Please daddy, don't do to me what you just did to Cece," said Bella, according to a lawyer for the family of Shanann Watts, the girls' mother.

Earlier, Bella had walked into the room just after Watts had strangled his wife, Shanann, and was wrapping her in a sheet to dispose of her body. "What are you doing with Mommy?" Bella asked her father.

Bella's last words and other details about the disturbing familial murders were revealed by attorney Steven Lambert on Tuesday's "Dr. Phil" show.

The latest information stems from Watts' recent confession, which was relayed to Shanann Watts' family and then to Lambert, the attorney confirmed on the show.

Lambert's summary of the events provides a chilling picture of how Chris Watts killed his pregnant wife, Shanann, 34, and their two children, Bella and Celeste, 3, and then disposed of their bodies at a secluded oil field where he worked. Weld County, Colorado, prosecutors said he strangled his wife with his bare hands, suffocated the children, and loaded them in his vehicle and drove away to hide their remains.

Watts initially denied involvement in the August disappearance of his wife and daughters, and even spoke with a local news station about his worry for their well-being. However, he later pleaded guilty to the killings and was sentenced in November to five life sentences after prosecutors and Shanann's family agreed to drop the possibility of the death penalty.

Colorado Bureau of Investigations spokeswoman Susan Medina said Watts provided investigators with "additional information" about the murders of his family on February 18. The CBI said a written report and audio file from that interview will be released Thursday.

Why he did it

After his sentencing last November, prosecutors had said they may never know what led Watts to kill his wife and daughters.

"I don't think he will ever tell us. I don't think he will give an honest assessment of why he did what he did, how he did what he did," Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said.

But in the "Dr. Phil" interview, Lambert said the couple got into a fight and Chris Watts confessed he was having an affair. He also said he wanted a divorce and declared that their relationship was over.

"And she had said something to the effect of, 'Well, you're not gonna see the kids again.' As a consequence of that conversation, he strangled her to death," Lambert said.

As Watts was preparing to move the body, Bella walked in and asked about her mother, Lambert said.

"She's 4, what we've been told she's quite smart -- was quite smart -- and knew something likely was up. And what he said was that, 'Mommy is sick, we need to take her to the hospital to make her better,'" Lambert said.

Lambert said his understanding is that Chris Watts put Shanann's body in his truck and then put his children, who were alive at the time, into the truck. He took Celeste's favorite blanket and smothered her, Lambert said.

"At this point, Bella had unbuckled herself from the vehicle," Lambert said. Watts walked back to the truck and that's when Bella made the plea for her life, Lambert said.

At Watts' sentencing, prosecutors said Bella fought back, but was killed. Prosecutors also argued that Watts did not kill her in a rage but deliberately and viciously.

The "Dr. Phil" episode also features video of Chris Watts watching a neighbor's surveillance tape of him backing up his truck and putting something in the back. As Watts watches that surveillance tape, he puts his hands on his head, and the neighbor later notes that he was acting fidgety.
