Murder charges filed against man in case of missing Colorado mom

CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. — Colorado prosecutors filed five charges against Patrick Frazee in the death of Kelsey Berreth, his missing fiancee and mother of his 1-year-old daughter.

Frazee showed no emotion in the Teller County Court in Cripple Creek on Monday morning.

He was charged with two counts of murder in the first degree and three counts of solicitation to commit murder in the first degree, District Attorney Dan May said.

Frazee is accused of killing Berreth, who disappeared last month. Berreth’s body has not been found, officials said.

Prosecutors filed two murder charges because they have different theories. One says he acted alone to kill Berreth, and another says he alone or with other people killed her during a robbery.

The three solicitation charges refer to soliciting the murder in three separate incidents. It could mean he solicited the same person three times or three people on different occasions.

Frazee’s arrest on murder charges came almost a month after Berreth vanished on Thanksgiving near Woodland Park, a city between Denver and Colorado Springs.

Authorities do not believe Berreth is alive. They have not determined a motive.

If convicted, Frazee could face the death penalty.

Woman tried to poison husband by pouring antifreeze into his drinks, prosecutor says

NEW YORK – A New York woman faces multiple charges after she allegedly tried to murder her estranged husband by poisoning his drinks with antifreeze, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Renee Burke, 40, allegedly broke into Matthew Burke's Long Island home to slip the deadly ingredient into his beverages. Burke, who faces charges of attempted murder, attempted assault, burglary and endangering the welfare of a child, pleaded not guilty.

Officials say it started when Burke, with her kids in tow, entered his home and poured pink antifreeze into a wine bottle. On Sept. 6, Matthew Burke poured a glass of the wine but spit it out after tasting something odd, he told investigators.

Burke initially thought the wine had turned bad, but then a babysitter told him one of his children said that "Mommy came and put something in Daddy's drink," according to Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini.

On a second occasion, Sini said that Renee Burke poured antifreeze in Matthew Burke's soda, which he also noticed and spat out.

On a third occasion that was caught on video, his wife allegedly mixed the antifreeze into another bottle of wine. Sini said Renee Burke used baby bottles to pour the concoction into a wine bottle in his refrigerator, unaware that he had set up a surveillance camera at the suggestion of police.

Detectives initially arrested Burke for the alleged burglary when she met her husband to give him their children, ages 4 and 8. Matthew Burke has primary custody.

When questioned, Renee Burke claimed she poured fruit juice into the wine, according to the DA. Her internet history contradicted that explanation, investigators say, and included multiple searches about the lethality of antifreeze.

Mike McKie lived next door to the Burke family in Holbrook for years.

"As things went on police were called a few times so it raised some suspicion. But both of them respectable people, looked like great parents. Just a rough relationship," McKie said.

He knew there were problems at the Grundy Avenue home but never expected Renee would allegedly try to kill Matthew.

"That's a shocker, I mean that's a big shocker. To say she attempted to kill him," McKie said.

A judge set cash bail for Renee Burke at $200,000 or a $400,000 bond.

SEATTLE – A Washington state man accused of killing his brother has been charged with murder after he allegedly drove a 4-foot-long sword through the victim’s head Sunday night.

Buckey Wolfe, 26, who prosecutors said appears to be mentally ill, called 911 around 6:40 p.m. and told an operator that he had killed his brother, and that he thought he was a lizard, according to The Seattle Times.

“The defendant’s actions — jamming the tang end of a four-foot long sharpened metal-bladed sword-like instrument completely through the victim’s head and killing him — demonstrate the danger he poses,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Scott O’Toole wrote in charging documents obtained by the paper.

Wolfe told the 911 dispatcher, “God told me he was a lizard,” and “Kill me, kill me, I can’t live in this reality,” according to the documents.

Prosecutors said Wolfe told officers he suffered from schizophrenia. During the arrest he reportedly said “that (the officers’) eyes and mouths were changing” and apparently thought they were turning into lizards.

On a Facebook page identified by KIRO as Wolfe’s, Wolfe posted Jan. 1, “I will dash you lizards to pieces like pottery and scatter your bones to the winds!!!!!”

Multiple reports identify Wolfe as part of the Seattle chapter of the far-right group the Proud Boys, and screenshots of Wolfe’s social media posts appear to show him at gatherings.

The Proud Boys posted a statement in their online magazine denying that he was a member, saying, “Buckey had been to some of the same rallies and events that Proud Boys were at, but after learning of his paranoia and mental instability the Seattle chapter steered clear of him.”

Citing allegedly mental health issues and the violence of the crime, Judge Arthur Chapman set bail at $1 million, according to KIRO.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico man says his landscaper asked to bury his dead cat in the man’s backyard, but instead it was a dead baby.

KOAT reported that Thomas Dunn lives in the home where the body was found in the backyard.

David Zuber, the landscaper, and his girlfriend, Monique Romero, were arrested last week in the death of their 1-year-old daughter, Anastazia Romero.

Dunn said law enforcement, including United States Department of Homeland Security, knocked on his door at the beginning of January.

The body was found inside two layers of a white plastic trash bag inside of a black duffel bag buried in Dunn’s backyard.

Dunn said the suspect originally asked to bury his cat in the backyard. Dunn said he did not think that was strange because the yard was used as a pet cemetery.

Zuber and Romero face charges of child abuse resulting in death.

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — The wife of an Army sergeant and her alleged lover are charged with plotting the murder of her husband in Berrien County, according to WXMI.

Army Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III, 23, was shot multiple times around 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve in front of his father’s home on Colfax Avenue in St. Joseph Township.

“I’m wondering what was going through her mind, actually I’m trying to understand it all,” said Tyrone Hassel Jr., the victim’s father.

Berrien County prosecutors say Kemia Hassel was having an affair with Jeremy Cuellar, also an active-duty soldier at Fort Stewart in Georgia, and they planned to kill Tyrone Hassel to take the Army’s death benefit.

“It’s a lot of anger, because, you know, it seems like it boils down to — it was over money,” Hassel Jr. said.

Investigators say Cuellar traveled from Fort Stewart to Chicago several days prior to the murder, waited for directions from Kemia Hassel and finally shot and killed Tyrone Hassel Dec. 31.

Authorities arrested Kemia Hassel and Jeremy Cuellar last week, and on Monday charged both with first-degree premeditated murder. Cuellar has also been charged with felony firearm.

“She deceived us all,” Hassel Jr. said. “I thought she was a completely different person than who she really is.”

If found guilty, Kemia Hassel is looking at life in prison without parole. Cuellar is being held in a Georgia jail awaiting extradition.

Colorado home where Chris Watts killed his family is up for auction

Chris Watts' multilevel Colorado home is being foreclosed and put up for auction -- for any buyers willing to look past its tragic history.

The house in Frederick, where Watts killed his pregnant wife and two young daughters in August, will be up for public auction on April 17 at the Weld County public trustee's office in Greeley, according to paperwork filed last month.

Watts is serving life in prison for the killings.

The public trustee filed a notice on December 18 that the five-bedroom, 4,177-square-foot home is being foreclosed because mortgage payments have been missed. The house was bought in 2013 for about $400,000.

The mortgage's outstanding principal balance is about $349,900, the trustee's notice says. Real estate website Zillow.com estimates the home is worth about $510,000.

At auction, the highest and best cash bid will win, the notice says.

Watts' wife, Shanann Watts, 34, and their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, were reported missing August 13. The mother was 15 weeks' pregnant.

Chris Watts initially put out a plea for his family's return and denied having anything to do with their disappearance.

Three days later, the body of Shanann Watts was found in a shallow grave at an oil worksite. The girls' bodies were found in two oil tanks nearby.

Chris Watts had strangled his wife and suffocated the children, authorities said, and he was arrested.

Watts pleaded guilty in November to first degree murder and other charges in their deaths and was sentenced to five life sentences with no possibility of parole.

Watts, authorities said, was having an affair. The woman, a co-worker, said Watts told her he and his wife were separating.

Barbie doll left on grave of 6-year-old murder victim could shed new light on cold case

SALT LAKE CITY — Who left a Barbie doll on Rosie Tapia’s grave? That was the question Thursday at a press conference held by the Utah Cold Case Coalition. 23 years later, they still don't know the answer, but continue to ask for help.

"I’m hoping the Lord will let me live until we find the person who took my daughter," Lewine Tapia, Rosie's mother, told KSTU.

Rosie Tapia was 6 years old when she was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City apartment and sexually assaulted back in August of 1995. Her body was found several hours later in a canal off the Jordan River.

"She was a happy child," Tapia said. "She always had a smile on her face."

Rosie would have been 30-years-old Thursday. Instead, she rests in a grave at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. This is where her mom says she found a Barbie doll.

After Rosie’s passing, there were items that were left on her gravesite," said Tapia, "so I just gathered them up and took them home."

23 years later, the Utah Cold Case Coalition says there are factors that have led them to believe the doll may be a valuable clue. They say two possible persons of interest have been identified who had some fixation with barbies.

"It’s a Sweetheart Barbie that was manufactured in 1994," said private investigator Jason Jensen.

Francine Bardole with West Jordan Police says they are using a new cutting edge DNA extraction method on the doll.

"In this buffer solution are the skin cells from those who have touched the evidence," said Bardole, a forensic analyst with West Jordan City Police.

But coalition members say DNA analysis is expensive for the nonprofit, and are asking for the public's help.

"If somebody will come forward and say, 'I know who left that there,' or, 'I left that there,' then we may be able to confirm that; that might save those resources," said Karra Porter, co-founder of Utah Cold Case Coalition.

The coalition plans to wait at least four to six weeks to move forward with the analysis. Tapia said she's not putting too much hope into this lead, but would welcome any answers as to who may have done this to her daughter.

"I’m just happy that we’re getting a lot done on her case and people are willing to help," she said.

Salt Lake City Police say they have no updates on this investigation. If you have any information on the case, you are urged to contact the Utah Cold Case Coalition at 385-CLUE.
