RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- A man faces a murder charge after a woman who was found dead in Randolph County, according to the Randolph County Jail and arrest warrants.

Juan Carlos Matomoros-Godoy, 25, of Middlesex, was charged with murder in the death of 44-year-old Soledad Ortiz, of Asheboro, as well as first-degree kidnapping.

Ortiz was shot multiple times and the death is believed to be a homicide, Randolph County officials say.

At about 1:23 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a report of a body found near Lake Lucas Bridge on Old Lexington Road.

At the scene, they found the body of Ortiz in a grassy area on the shoulder, about 10 feet from the pavement.

Deputies say she had been shot, and the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.

Shell casings were also found in the area.

The sheriff's office brought out K-9 officers to try to track down any other pieces of evidence.

"There’s not a lot of evidence," Seabolt said. "That’s why we’re hoping we can find other clues in reference to the dogs coming out. And it’s going to be a tough investigation but we have our detectives on the scene.”

Anyone with information and anyone who may have been in the area between midnight at 2 a.m. is asked to contact 911 or Randolph County Crime Stoppers at (336) 672-7463

LUMBERTON, N.C. — Police say they’re looking for a 13-year-old murder suspect who escaped from officers following a court appearance in the North Carolina city of Lumberton on Tuesday, officials said.

The boy, identified by state authorities only as Jericho W., fled around noon from a Department of Social Services building where juvenile court hearings are held, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said.

He was in court to face two counts of first-degree murder and a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon, the sheriff’s office said. Several law enforcement agencies are looking for him, including by air with the help of helicopters, authorities said.

Authorities have “a high degree of concern for the safety of both the juvenile and the public” because of his “prior history of assaultive and unpredictable behavior,” the state Department of Public Safety said.

Details about how the boy escaped weren’t immediately released. He had made a juvenile court appearance Tuesday morning, the public safety department said. He was seen in the facility wearing leg restraints and no shoes, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was wearing a white T-shirt and beige pants near the facility, at the intersection of North Carolina Highway 27 and Country Club Road in Lumberton, the sheriff’s office said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he still had the leg restraints.

The public safety department said state law prohibits it from releasing details about the charges against Jericho because he is a juvenile. The law, however, says authorities may release the first name and last initial of certain juvenile escapees.

Authorities asked the public to report any sightings of the boy.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — A woman raised thousands of dollars for her 10-month-old baby’s funeral. Then, she was arrested for his death.

Victoria Jackson, 24, faces a charge of first-degree murder after she admitted to putting a pillow over 10-month-old Malachi’s face on May 24, according to Clearwater police.

She told 911 that she woke up and found the boy unresponsive in his crib, police say.

WFTS reports Jackson then created a GoFundMe to raise money to help pay for Malachi’s funeral.

“I want to give my son the best memorial service I can. He died last Friday night,” part of the description read, the station reports. “I’ve never been so heart broken in my life. Please help me take care of my baby one last time.”

The fundraiser brought in more than $4,300.

It wasn’t until last week that detectives learned of the suspect’s alleged role in the homicide after she reportedly told a friend that she killed the child.

PHILADELPHIA — A 14-year-old girl was arrested and charged with murder after police say she tied down and killed a 59-year-old Philadelphia man known for his animal rescue efforts.

Philadelphia police said they responded early November 5 to a report of a man in distress. Police entered the home and found a man, later identified as Albert Chernoff, partially tied to the bed with a massive head wound and several slashes to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female was seen leaving the property before police arrived, and police released surveillance video from inside the home in an attempt to identify her. The girl, who is 14, arrived with her mother and two defense attorneys to turn herself in, police said.

She was arrested November 8 and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 27, court documents show. Given her arrest, the surveillance video has since been removed, police said.

Police have not named the girl.

Jane Roh, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia district attorney, said officials have not decided whether to proceed in juvenile or adult court.

One of the teenager’s attorneys, Howard Taylor, told CNN the girl is currently in juvenile detention.

“It’s a very sad situation. Troubled girl. There’s a reason police aren’t saying much,” Taylor said. “There’s a lot more to it.”

When asked whether she was a victim, he said he “wouldn’t put it to that extent,” but added that “he wasn’t totally innocent, either.”

Chernoff was a well-known animal rescue advocate in Philadelphia. In the wake of his death, the makers of the documentary film “The Cat Rescuers” shared a short video of Chernoff, showing his cat tattoos, and praised his “warmth and affability.”

“The world is just a little bit colder today without this wonderful human being. Please take a moment to tell the cat rescuers in your life what they mean to you. We will never forget you, Al,” their Facebook post read. “We lost a gracious soul.”

In addition, Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia praised him in a Facebook post after his death.

“The animal rescue community, and especially the cat community has lost an amazing man,” the group said. “He was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met and he would do anything for anyone. You are already missed and there is a hole in the heart of every cat rescuer that will never be filled.”

Ricoh McClain

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Police say they have found the man responsible for stabbing a man to death at a Maryland Popeyes after what appeared to have been an argument over the restaurant's re-released chicken sandwich, police said.

Prince George's County police tweeted at about 12:06 a.m. Thursday that Ricoh McClain, 30, was arrested.

Jail records show McClain has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of marijuana.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, was stabbed outside the restaurant around 7p.m., Prince George's County Police spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan said at a news conference on Nov. 4. He had been in line for a chicken sandwich when he and another man got into an argument, which spilled onto the street, Donelan said. Police believe the argument began over someone cutting in line.

"For you to get that angry over anything ... and to develop into this type of violence, again, is a very sad and tragic day," Donelan said.

Officers who arrived on the scene applied lifesaving measures until the man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Donelan said.

Donelan asked the suspect and people who were in the restaurant at the time to reach out to detectives.

"We are looking for a male, and that male knows who he is," Donelan said. "He knows what he did here tonight, and he needs to do the right thing and he needs to step up and turn himself in."

ROANOKE, Va. — The manhunt for a Marine deserter wanted for murder led Roanoke, Virginia, police to shut down all schools in the city Thursday.

Authorities received a call about 4 a.m. regarding a sighting of Michael Alexander Brown, 22, who is suspected of killing his mother’s boyfriend last week in Hardy, about 9 miles east of Roanoke.

The motive in the killing is unclear.

Brown deserted his post at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina last month, police said.

Though Franklin County authorities said this week he was driving a 2008 Lincoln Town Car, Roanoke Police Chief Tim Jones said Brown was driving an RV when he was spotted in Roanoke.

A resident called police to say that a man in a black jacket was tapping on a window, and police responded and were “able to confirm to the best of our ability that it was Mr. Brown,” Jones said,

The RV, which was located nearby, was secured by a tactical team. Brown was believed to be on foot, perhaps looking for another vehicle, Jones said.

Brown is considered dangerous and may be armed with a “shoulder-held, high-capacity weapon,” Jones said. He has family ties in the Roanoke area, the chief said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office warned the public Monday that Brown was armed with a high-powered firearm and possibly other weapons.

Anyone who sees him should use caution and call police. Brown stands about 6 feet tall, weighs 154 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes, police said.

Brown was last seen wearing a black jacket, Jones said.

“He is navigationally savvy,” Jones said. “He knows how to move around. He’s not afraid to change his location. He’s not afraid to change his look.”

In addition to asking students, faculty and staff not to report to school Thursday, police also want anyone who lives within a half mile of Patrick Henry High School on Grandin Road to shelter in place and keep their doors locked.

About 2,000 students attend the high school.

The US Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Brown’s apprehension, Jones said.

North Carolina authorities have charged Brown with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Corey Duane Perrine

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A man, arrested after a Thomasville-to-Charlotte manhunt for attempted murder, now also faces a murder charge out of South Carolina.

WIS reports Corey Duane Perrine, 25, of Lexington, S.C., is charged with the murder of 44-year-old Cletis Edward Baker.

Baker's body was found in the area of Damascus Church Road in Westville, S.C., back in September.

Four others were arrested, but no one was charged with murder until Perrine was named as a suspect on Oct. 31, WIS reports.

By then, he was already in a jail in Davidson County on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, attempted first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and larceny of a motor vehicle.

On Sept. 25, Thomasville police say a person was shot in the face in the back of the Thomasville Inn, located at 407 National Highway.

Two suspects, identified as Perrine and Malachia Jones, then drove to South Main Street in High Point, where Perrine allegedly shot Jones and pushed him out of the vehicle at the Sunoco Gas Station, located at 2010 S. Main St.

Jones and the person shot at the Thomasville Inn were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. The person shot at the Thomasville Inn was in critical condition.

Jones was treated and released. He was then charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

Police said Perrine was driving a stolen black 2010 Chevrolet Malibu.

Later that night, at 11:14 p.m. Wednesday, Perrine allegedly carjacked three women in the 6000 block of Mayores Lane in Charlotte and drove off in their Chevrolet Impala.

The stolen Chevrolet Malibu was found nearby.

A short time later, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police found the Chevrolet Impala abandoned in the 3500 block of Fincher Blvd.

Around 6 a.m., police located Perrine walking on Statesville Avenue in Charlotte. He was taken into custody and transported back to Davidson County, where he is being held in the Davidson County Jail under a $1,075,000 secured bond.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is dead, two others were injured and a woman is in custody after a shooting in Winston-Salem, according to Winston-Salem police.

At 6:19 p.m., officers responded to a shots fired call on the 1300 block of Peachtree Street.

Shortly after arriving, officers were called to the Hanes Mall Boulevard exit ramp on Interstate 40.

Arriving officers found a car on the side of the road and two men — 22-year-old Ajian Lynell Jones, of Winston-Salem, and Andres Harris — suffering from gunshot wounds in the car.

EMS brought both men to a hospital.

Investigators learned a third gunshot victim, Charvez Brown, 25, of Winston-Salem, arrived at a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe he was involved in the same incident.

Officers believe Brown agreed to meet up with Danielle Charlette Miller on the 1300 block of Peachtree Street to sell her a controlled substance, but when he arrived, he was confronted by Harris and Jones.

Harris and Jones tried to rob Brown, and gunfire erupted, leaving all three men injured.

Brown reportedly went back to his home at 106 Green Point Drive before going to the hospital.

Miller, Harris and Jones left in a vehicle, but, after taking damage during the gunfire, the car stopped on I-40 west near Hanes Mall Boulevard.

When a passerby stopped to help, they saw the gunshot victim and called 911.

Jones died at the hospital.

Harris's injuries were later determined to be non-life-threatening.

Miller has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and aid and abetting an armed robbery. She was placed in the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.

She called 911 before being killed. The operator hung up when she couldn’t respond

BOSTON — A chilling 911 call may have captured Lina Bolanos' last moments, who was killed alongside her fiancé in their Boston penthouse.

"That was Lina's voice," Amanda Gibbs, Bolanos' godmother, confirmed on the witness stand Monday after listening to the 911 call, WBZ reported.

But in the call, Bolanos' voice came out muffled. And when she was unable to respond to repeated questions, the operator said she was "releasing the call" and hung up, WCVB reported.

Jurors heard that phone call on the third day of testimony in the double murder trial for the man suspected of killing the couple. Bolanos, 38, and Richard Field, 49, who were both well-known anesthesiologists, were stabbed to death in May 2017.

Prosecutors say the couple was killed by Bampumim Teixeira, who briefly worked as a concierge at the building where the couple lived. Because of his time there, Teixeira was familiar with the building's layout, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said in a news release in 2017.

Teixeira has pleaded not guilty.

"(Field was found) dead in a pool of his own blood. His hands bound behind his back with handcuffs," Assistant District Attorney John Pappas said in trial last week, according to WCVB. "Lina Bolanos was also in a pool of her blood after having been stabbed repeatedly in the neck."

"No credible evidence will tell you that Bampumim Teixeira broke into the home of Lina Bolanos and Richard Field and murdered them," defense attorney Steven Sack said in the trial last week. "And that's because he didn't."

'You guys are going to die'

On May 5, a person wearing gloves, a bright yellow shirt, a hooded jacket and carrying a backpack sneaked into the building's garage before the couple returned home, according to the news release from the district attorney's office.

Later that evening, Matthias Heidenreich -- a friend of the two doctors -- received a series of texts from Field that a gunman was in their apartment and to call 911, according to his testimony last week. He testified he responded but got no answer.

Authorities were first contacted around 8:30 p.m. by the concierge, who had been alerted by a concerned friend following a text from Field, the release said.

Upon responding to the grisly scene, Boston police officer Scott MacIsaac testified Monday he shot Teixeira as he entered the couple's apartment after he saw a silhouette seemingly holding a firearm, WCVB reported.

When Texeira was taken into custody in the hallway, he told police there were dead bodies in the penthouse, Boston police detective Sean Wallace testified.

"Then he said, 'You guys are going to die.' Then he said, 'They killed my wife.' Then he mentioned something and I heard the word 'sniper,''' the detective said in court.

"He was smiling up at me," Wallace testified.

Outside the apartment, police found a backpack with a replica firearm and jewelry, the release said. A carving knife and a bright yellow shirt were also found nearby, the release said.

Testimony will resume Tuesday, when the jurors will visit the doctors' penthouse, WBZ reported.

Mom who suggested son killed himself charged in murder of children found hanged in basement

ALBANY TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A Pennsylvania mother faces several counts of murder after she allegedly killed two of her children by hanging them in the basement of their Albany Township home in September.

Lisa Snyder, 36, was charged Monday with two counts of both first- and third-degree murder, as well as two felony counts of endangering the welfare of children, Berks County District Attorney John Adams said at a press conference.

“I don’t think that I can stand up here, nor can anyone, and explain the horrific loss of two innocent children’s lives. I think it goes without explanation,” Adams said.

Police found two of Snyder’s three children, 8-year-old Conner and 4-year-old Brinley, after Snyder called 911.

“The wire was wrapped around the main support beam of the basement and each end was wrapped around the victims’ necks.” Adams said. “In the area of the victims were two wooden, bar height dining room chairs, knocked down on their sides.”

Paramedics worked to resuscitate the children, who were flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital. They were taken off life support three days later.

Adams said that evidence and Snyder’s behavior contradicted her account of what led up to the tragedy.

The 36-year-old didn’t go back to the basement while paramedics tried to revive the children, Adams said, which raised questions for investigators.

Snyder also claimed that her son was bullied at school and hung himself and his sister. However, Adams said the boy appeared to be “a happy child” in video of him getting off a school bus just before his mother called police. Family members and school officials told police Conner “never expressed that he was bullied or suicidal.”

Snyder’s internet search history in the days and hours before the siblings were found included the queries “carbon monoxide in a car how long to die,” “almost got away with it,” “I almost got away with it best episodes,” “hanging yourself,” “do a hybrid car produce carbon monoxide,” “does a hybrid car produce carbon monoxide while idling” and “hanging yourself,” Adams said. The last search brought up a website explaining how to use a short drop to hang one’s self.

Adams said Snyder ordered the plastic-coated dog lead with a 250-pound limit the day before the children were found, and picked it up from Walmart the morning of the 23rd. It’s not yet clear how Snyder allegedly got both children up onto the barstools and into the looped ends of the dog lead.

“Two children’s lives were lost here,” Adams said. “This was a very emotional investigation for all of those involved.”

Investigators say Snyder told a friend she was suffering from depression and “didn’t care about her kids,” according to The Morning Call. Adams said Snyder’s children were placed under the care of Berks County Children and Youth Services in 2014 but were returned to her in February 2015.

Snyder also faces unrelated charges of sexual intercourse with an animal and cruelty to animals after investigators uncovered images of the family dog performing sex acts on her, Adams said.

Snyder didn’t enter a plea Monday and is being held without bail at the Berks County Jail.
